Today I am posting for school about the Youth Criminal Justice Act as a part of the class's Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen novel study. I am going to be exploring some aspects of the YCJA in relation to Touching Spirit Bear. Enjoy! :)

After severely injuring classmate Peter Driscal, the main character Cole is sent to a detention centre. From there, his parole officer, Garvey, introduces him to the concept of Circle Justice as an alternative to going to court and potentially facing jail time. Instead, Cole partakes in a Justice Circle involving many members who voice their opinions on the decision to be made on Cole's future.

If I were a part of Cole's Justice Circle, there would be several types of information I would consider that would help me to make decisions. I would consider Cole's circumstance, such as his background and personal life, his prior offences, the seriousness of the crime he committed, and also his attitude toward the crime and potential crimes in the future. Taken together, these things would help me to determine the type of punishment that would be most beneficial to Cole and the rest of society, including Peter.

Cole is obviously a very troubled youth. His life hasn't exactly been all sunshine and roses, and so he takes out his anger on other people. His father is abusive towards Cole and his mother never stepped in to defend him, mostly because she was drinking too much alcohol. To understand Cole, you must realize that, because of the abusive relationship between himself and his father, he doesn't know any different. He's grown up with the idea that hurting someone as a release of your anger is acceptable, which is obviously not the case. Furthermore, Cole is very alone and independent and has been throughout his life, as he has mentioned several times in the novel. He feels as if no one cares about him, and so he thinks he can do whatever he wants because no one will care about the consequences. He also feels the need to prove himself to everyone that he is above them because he doesn't feel like anyone cares.

If I were in Cole's Justice Circle, I would consider all this information. I would recognize that Cole has the ability to change, but circumstances have not allowed him to control his anger and learn what is acceptable. That being said, I would also not want Cole in the public until someone who understands has the chance to ensure he has positively changed. My decision would be to keep Cole in the detention centre and have people who have been in the same position as him and gotten over it speak to him. After that, I would vote to send him to the island to learn some important things about himself, but also to isolate him from the public while he heals. Personally, I would not vote to send him to island again because he did not prove the first time that he could handle it. I would look for another way to help him heal, like having people who understand interact with him as I said before.
Hope you enjoyed this post! Thanks for reading. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1129306980802659335.post-57094207211230702652014-03-06T21:08:00.004-08:002014-03-06T21:09:36.607-08:00GINS Task #8: Word ArtHey! (: Today for our Global Issues Novel Study, we were assigned with the task of creating a piece of word art. We chose a quote from our novel (mine is War Brothers by Sharon E. McKay) and used computer software or pen and paper to form it into a powerful visual. The quote is meant to express the most important issues and themes that are occurring throughout the novel. I created my quote with Adobe Illustrator, hope you like it. (:

"Can a good boy be turned into a killer more easily than one who was not a good boy in the first place? I think of how the words of God were so misused by Kony and his commanders. I now believe that if you tell a lie, feed it, nurture it, and help it to grow, it will be believed. It will grow powerful despite being rotten at the core."

The first reason I chose this quote is because the main issue throughout the whole novel is discussed, examined, and analyzed in this quote. The underlying message in this quote is asking: who's fault is it if we are forced into thinking bad things are the right thing to do, and we carry them out? Is the person committing the actions responsible, or the one who persuaded them into that way of thinking? Is that human's soul truly evil, or truly good, based on which way they were influenced? These questions are all pondered and addressed in the novel and are a huge part of the overall story. Second, it connects to worldview :p. "View of human nature" is clearly explored in this quote so that's another connection that can be made. Finally, this quote just really stays with me and makes me think, therefore giving it some personal connection.

There were several intentional choices I made while creating this piece of art. I made certain words that I felt were important, such as believe, lie, powerful, and rotten, larger than the others because I felt that they were the words that really stand out in this quote. Throughout the quote, I also used several different fonts. I chose an un-distracting, basic font for the filler words so they did not detract from the message. For the word believe and believed, I chose a scrawled calligraphy because I felt like it was uneven and each letter was different, much like each of our own beliefs. Lie was put in a scratched out kind of font because we think of lies as covering the truth, like the scratches, and it also gave it a more sinister look. The middle section of the quote is in earthy green because it is using a plant analogy throughout that section, and I chose the cursive font because it looked floral. For the word powerful, I put it in a strong-looking in font and made the colour red to infer to the disastrous outcomes that can come with power, and if a lie grows powerful. Finally, I chose to make rotten in a messy writing with highlights of yellow/green because it made it look as if something was rotting.
Today's post is again a part of the GINS (Global Issues Novel Study) that I have been participating in for school. To find more information on this, click the initial post I have linked to above. This post was a free write exploring empathy through the main character's mind. I have written a piece from the perspective of Jacob in my novel, War Brothers by Sharon E. McKay. Enjoy! (:
Hello! How was your weekend? Mine was far too short. Anyways, today I am posting to say that Brianna and I are going to be doing a read-a-long with each other once a month! Yay! Last month we read Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian. This month, it's Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi! We are both super excited for this read. And I adore the cover. I will be reading this while away for the Family Day weekend but the drive is long so I figure I will get some reading in! Here's our schedule!

February 13: page 112 / Chapter 18
February 14: page 225 / Chapter 33
February 16: page 338 / The End

We will also be doing a joint post about our thoughts at the end of the month. Have a lovely long weekend!

Check out Brianna's blog, For the Love of Books, at booknook24674.blogspot.ca. Seriously, go. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1129306980802659335.post-82165751706199085842014-02-01T09:29:00.002-08:002014-02-01T09:31:21.170-08:00January Wrap-Up and February TBR + Epic RecsHey! I apologize in advance for not posting those Burn for Burn posts with Brianna... the plans kinda fell through, but we still had a great time reading the book and writing the one post we did do (check it out here). On with the wrap-up!

January Wrap-Up
My vision for January was very ambitious, but I guess I never realized how busy I would end up being throughout this month. I didn't get through nearly as many of my top-priority books as I would've liked, but oh well. I did however have a chance to re-read four Harry Potter books, and every book I read/re-read this month was five stars but one. I am going to list each of the book along with a description of my thoughts in just three words and my rating.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling*: ***** (five stars) - Just so spectacular.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K.Rowling*: ***** (five stars) - Snape, not okay.

Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian: ***** (five stars) - Entertainment + revenge.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K.Rowling*: ***** (five stars) - I hate Umbridge.

Winterling by Sarah Prineas: ** */* (two and a half stars) - Good idea, disappointing.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling*: ***** (five stars) - Thrilling and hilarious.

*Re-read

February TBR
My top-priority shelf idea is really working out for me, so I'm going to continue to use that. Now that's it's February though, it's time for me to redesign that shelf. Also, throughout the month I have the freedom to take books off that shelf that I have now read or that I don't intend to read soon anymore. However, I can't add any books to that shelf until the next month, so that I can see how much I condensed it. I love the look of this shelf for February - all these books sound fantastic!

Now onto Epic Recs! So I have some explaining to do. My epic rec for last month was Taken by Erin Bowman, however, halfway or so through the month I realized Taken would not be available to me this month. My back-up was The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken. Now, the problem was that I really didn't want to read anything sad and apparently the ending is pretty heart-breaking, which was not what I needed, so I didn't read it right away. Once I was in an okay frame of mind again however, I chose to finish Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Winterling so that I wouldn't have three books on the go. Anyways, I am reading it right away so it pretty much counts as January.

I actually have two books for Epic Recs this month. One of them is super short, and the other is a graphic novel, so Brianna and I figured together it would be one epic rec. These books are Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, and Page by Paige by Laura Lee Gulledge. My epic rec for Brianna is Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo. I'm super excited!

What are you reading this month? Let me know in the comments below, or link to your TBR so I can check it out. Have a lovely day!

As to explore further into our current study of Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms, along with a few others, we created a charter to apply to our entire globe. Because we all read different novels, we were all able to contribute our different ideas spurred by the issues happening in the country we were reading about. Below you can see our document that we came up with.

My novel, War Brothers by Sharon E. McKay, takes place in Uganda. Many of the laws in our charter were inspired by the situations that have occurred there. In the Canadian charter, we also have equality rights, which state that we are all equal. However, they say that we will not be discriminated based on age, gender, religion, ethnic origin, or mental/physical disability, but they don't mention discrimination based on sexuality. In Uganda, they passed an Anti-Homosexuality Act, and to prevent this type of behaviour, we included sexuality in our equality rights. Another specification we made that is not in the Canadian charter is the fact that you have the right to peacefully challenge the laws in the charter without being accused of treason, unlike that of the Ugandan constitution. Though we were inspired by several things in the Canadian charter, because we felt like they were fundamental rights that are critical to a fair and just country, we also added our own rights, particularly in the Government Obligation Rights. We created this section because we found that in many of the countries from our novels, the government was not upholding their end of the bargain. Even if certain laws are in place, the government does not always follow them. One major law we included in this section was the fact that the government cannot turn a blind eye to it's citizens, and also the fact that the government cannot use violence against the citizen's. We also included mandatory health care, because though that is usually a government choice, so many people in Uganda have died of AIDS that we thought it prudent to include it.

Along the way, my group and I had little to no disagreements. We all agreed on the rights that should be included, except for one misunderstanding. We were discussing collective rights, language education rights in particular, and we misinterpreted something Brianna said as to mean every country should have a school with every language someone's first language is. However, this was a miscommunication and in truth she meant a school in which a large group of people in the province, state, or region needed schooling in that language.

After doing this activity, I also consulted The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a global document created by the UN. There were several things listed we had considered, but there were also some things I had never even thought about. For example, marriage. Below is the exact Article 16 from the Universal Declaration: "(1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality, or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at it's dissolution.
(2) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.
(3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State."

For Brianna and I's Burn for Burn Read-a-Long, we decided we'd do a joint-post for each segment we read. For the first section (page 80 / Chapter 7), to have been completed yesterday, we chose to explore characters. From our first impressions of the characters, we have used a creator on dolldivine (the Lord of the Rings one) to express how we think their physical appearance looks like, and from that you can infer things about their personality. The character creator we are using is very in-depth for facial expressions, which is why we chose it, but is very limited in the sense of modern clothing. For this reason, I'll provide some things I might've added if I could. The only rule we have is don't use the cover! To see Brianna's post, you can click here so you can compare and contrast our two ideas of the characters.

Mary. Unknowingly like Brianna, I also created Mary in the moment she saw Reese. This moment really stood out to me because it is the first time we really see and understand how Mary feels and see her in our minds. I tried to create the look of discomfort and uncertainty, and that moment when you're just about to cry but haven't yet. I actually really liked the way her hair turned out, the colour was spot-on and I loved the wind-blown, curly look to her hair. It seemed to fit the way the book described and also the image I had in my head.

What I would add/change:

Cardigan: I always just picture Mary wearing a white cardigan *shrugs*

Pants: If it were summertime (which it is in the book), I would change the white jeans to white jean short-shorts instead.

Shoes: Change the shoes, they look kind of old fashioned. I would personally picture her in those strappy sandals or flats.

Lillia. I had a vision in my head for how I wanted Lillia to look, and I wasn't sure I could achieve that with this creator. However, I think I did alright. I really love the way her hair turned out because I picture it being straight, but her always having to curl it and wave it and style it because she's friends with Rennie and therefore expected to look excellent 24/7. With her outfit, I tried to create her white cashmere sweater. I was also happy with the expression I achieved for her face, I can't put a finger on it, but it seemed so her.

What I would add/change:

Eyeliner: In the book, she talks about putting winged eyeliner on asian eyes. I think it would be so cool if I could add that.

Pants: I picture her much more with a short black or white skirt, but it didn't have that option, so I chose basic jeans instead.

Shoes: Though the high heels also seem to fit for her, I would rather choose espadrilles because in the book it mentions she wears them. I always espadrilles as red, black, or white, so it would be one of those colours.

Kat. I love Kat!! She's easily my favourite character so far. For her, I really wanted a kind of tough look to her, because she's not afraid of getting right in there and stating her mind. I created her face with harder lines than either Mary or Lillia (like her eyebrows and eyes). Her hardened expression shows that she's not exactly forgiving, but she also has an air of mischievousness in her expression which reminds me of her fire when she stood up to Rennie. Again for Kat, I really like the hair! I picture it dark brown and relaxed: not exactly wavy, not exactly straight. I see her as a person who honestly doesn't really care.

What I would add/change:

Pants: Frayed and faded denim cut-offs are what I picture for Kat. If I could do that, I definitely would.

Shoes: I picture her in either unlaced, folded-over cuffed combat boots, or a casual pair of black flip-flops.

Today I am going to be making a post for our Global Issues Novel Study (GINS) which began back in October. I am posting today about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in connection to the events in my novel, War Brothers by Sharon E. McKay, and the country it takes place in. My novel takes place in Uganda, so that's how I will be phrasing the questions.
Is there a similar document to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Uganda?
The Ugandan government has a constitution which lays out the basis of their government. I found it very interesting that there was a large focus on not speaking against the constitution, because that would be considered treason.

What rights and freedoms are guaranteed in the document?
In the Chapter 4 - Human Rights section of the Ugandan Constitution, it is clear that Ugandan's have very detailed and similar rights to those that we do. They have several sections similar to our equality rights which give rights to women, children, those with disabilities, as well as the section titled "equality and freedom from discrimination". There was also a section that said the citizens are able to vote in elections, but it doesn't say how often. They also included the fact that people's property and homes cannot be searched without consent, and each person has right to a public hearing after arrest. I didn't see anything resembling our mobility rights. The Constitution also says that "no person shall be subjected to any form of torture, cruel or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." What I found particularly interesting is that this document was last revised in 1982, yet many of the rights given to the citizens are not being followed by the government. Just this December, the government passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill which prevents the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender) from being what they are. Furthermore, the police forces and government treats them unfairly and they are even subjected to physical abuse from their own government! As for the section I quote earlier about not being subjected to torture, well, according to the Amnesty International survey in 2011, this is not the case. Directly from the site...

"Dozens of people in the
north-eastern Karamoja region were reported to have been killed during the year
in disputed circumstances by government soldiers engaged in security and
disarmament operations. Army personnel were also accused of committing torture
and other ill-treatment in the course of these operations. The government did
not institute credible investigations into alleged human rights violations and
no one was brought to justice. In October, the Uganda Human Rights
Commission reported that torture and ill-treatment by the police, other
law-enforcement officials and the military remained
widespread."

How might the issue in your novel be different if the Canadian Charter were applied?
The major issue at hand in my novel is Joseph Kony's LRA (Lord's Resistance Army). It is established throughout the novel that Kony is the "bad guy" (for lack of a better term), and the government are the "good guys" who are trying to catch Kony. This is right in a sense, but there are many crimes that go against their charter which the police force or government of Uganda has committed. The thing is, Uganda has a constitution which outlines almost all the rights we have in Canada, and more, and when I read it I found it to be very fair and respectful to the citizens. However, if the government doesn't follow it than what use is it? Therefore, I feel that if the Canadian Charter were applied, it would be the same situation as what is going on now. The problem is, even though rights and freedoms are in place in the Ugandan Constitution, the government does not respect or follow them, so why would the Canadian Charter be any different? Both the Canadian and Ugandan charter's prohibit the kind of behaviour the LRA is showing, so I don't think the difference would affect it. The one thing I noticed is that because the Ugandan constitution does not have mobility rights, people who are afraid and in danger would not be able to leave the country. As it says in the Mobility Rights of the Canadian charter, 6. (1) Every citizen of Canada has the right to enter, remain in, and leave Canada. I couldn't find anything that expressed that Ugandan citizen could do the same. Therefore, more children and women could be held kidnapped by the LRA, more causalities would occur, and more people would be traumatized because they may not be able to leave the country when the LRA was at large.
Now that December has come to a close, it's time to do my December wrap-up and January TBR in my new format (check out this post for more information). Where did December go??? My favourite month of the year... gone... anyway, on with the post.

December Wrap-Up
December was a great month for me! The beginning of the month didn't look to good, as I was really busy and tired, but over the Christmas break I was able to relax and catch up on my reading! Not only was this month great because I read over my usual read count, but also because I read some fantastic books and had the chance to re-read three of my favourite books! I am going to list each of the books I read along with a description of my thoughts in only three words, a rating, and a link to my review if I wrote one.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins*: ***** (five stars) - I can't even.

The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson: *** (three stars) - A bit disappointing.

Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan: **** (four stars) - Adorable and fun.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling*: ***** (five stars) - Ahh these books.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: *** (three stars) - Heartwarming but underwhelming.

Partials by Dan Wells: **** (four stars) - Slow, then awesome!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling*: ***** (five stars) - So much love.

The Giver by Lois Lowry: **** (four stars) - Powerful and provocative.

*Re-read

January TBR + Epic Recs

Yay! My first time trying out my new method of TBR's! My goal this month is to read at least 7 books. These books are arranged slightly by priority, but will most likely not be read in this exact order. I already know that I'll be reading some of these far more ahead than they appear on here. My Epic Rec for this month is Taken by Erin Bowman, and Brianna's is Unravelling by Elizabeth Norris. I will definitely be reading Winterling and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (because I'm currently reading them), Taken (my epic rec), and Burn for Burn because I'm doing a read-along with Brianna.

I'm gonna try this out... Out of these 18 books, vote for your top 5 I should read in January in the comments down below. And let me know what you think of my new system!

The formatting of this post was inspired by this post at For the Love of Books.

2013 Wrap-Up
I read 71 books, which was one book above my goal of 70 books. I was a little surprised, because at the beginning and middle of the year I was certain would be reading quite above my goal. Near the end I knew I was struggling to meet my goal, but I did it, with one extra book!
Fourteen out of twenty-two! That's not too bad! I still want to read all these books on this list, though some are less of a priority now than they were a year ago. Still though. I did fairly good!

2014 Looking Forward
I've pretty much given up making lists of what books I want to read in a year. However, I do have a few goals for 2014. I am going to include those goals in my resolutions post in a few days. For now, I'm going to be mentioning some must-reads and also introducing you to my new way of operating my blog! (:

If you regularly check my blog, you'll know that I never stick my TBR's (except, miraculously, I'm on an eight-book, sticking-to-the-tbr streak - who knew?). Anyways, it just wasn't working. I kept promising to read things and I either never received the book from the library in time or I just didn't get around to reading it. Well guess what? Problem solved! In replace of a TBR, I'm going to be taking a screenshot at the beginning of each month showing what my top-priority shelf on goodreads looks like. Each month there will be 18 books on that shelf. This is a great way of solving my problem, because it shows a large variety of books that are all possibilities that I may read, but leaves room for my reading "moods" or book-acquiring complications.

I will share one of my goals with you right now: Finishing series! Here is a list of series I want to finish this year.

The Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

Legend trilogy by Marie Lu

Dustlands trilogy by Moira Young

Partials Sequence series by Dan Wells

Fairytale Retellings series by Jackson Pearce

Delirium trilogy by Lauren Oliver

Unwind Dystology series by Neil Shusterman

Here is also a very short list of books and series I am definitely going to start this year.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Breathe by Sarah Crossan

Across the Universe by Beth Revis

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

Title: Liesl and Po

Author: Lauren Oliver

Genre: Middle Grade Paranormal

Pg #: 307

Reading Span: October 17 to 21

Rating: **** (four stars)

The story begins with Liesl, our main character, a quiet girl locked in her tower bedroom for the rest of eternity by her stepmother. Then we have Po, the genderless ghost who comes from the Other Side, and his loyal cat-dog companion, Bundle. Together, the three form a close friendship through (at first) shy encounters that bloom into a heartwarming story. If that on it's own isn't enough to make you say "awww", well, that's where we differ. Then of course there's our other charming characters and subplots, featuring Will as the Alchemists apprentice.

I read this what feels like so long ago that it's very difficult for me to write a review at this point. However, I will try my best.

I loved the characters and the dialogue between them. Liesl was so naive and innocent to start, and after her journey and interactions, you can see her growing up. The other characters like Augusta, Will and the guard were fun characters which made the story much more entertaining. However, I found the stepmother (Augusta) and her daughter to be very stereotypical. The stepmother always has to be evil and ugly. *sighs*

The plot was fun because you could see the confusion unfolding from various perspectives. It was very well-written that way. Sometimes I did find the plot to be a little repetitive or slow, though.

Overall I found it to be a very moving novel. Lauren Oliver wrote this story from her emotions about a close friend's death, and it really shone through in the story. You could tell the emotions were from the heart, and were very real and raw. This story is ultimately one of hope, growing up, and moving on. Because this message was very prevalent throughout the book, I found it to be quite memorable. I would recommend this beautiful coming-of-age tale to everyone.

That's the best I can do! Hope you liked it. Have a wonderful day!

Title: A Christmas Carol
Author: Charles Dickens
Pg #: 131
Reading Span: December 25, 2013
Rating: *** (three stars)

A Christmas Carol is the classic story of an old, bitter man, who, through meetings of past, present, and future spirits, changes his life for the better - just in time for Christmas!

This is a very traditional and heartwarming tale. It was the perfect book for me to read on Christmas Day. That said, it was very easy to forget that this wasn't just another A Christmas Carol retelling. There was nothing original or gripping in the way Dickens wrote it that felt like it was special as compared to other editions. I give him credit for coming up with this wonderful story, but I was a little surprised at how average it seemed to me.

Let's talk about the characters in this story. Because I have seen various editions of this story, none of them were surprise. Scrooge is bitter, Bob Cratchit is kind and devoted, and Fred (Scrooge's nephew) is merry and caring. Everything with the characters were pretty much as expected and reflected on the various movies and plays I have seen. The one thing I did find was that the Ghost of Christmas Past was extremely hard to picture in my head. I still fail to see how he can randomly grow legs... The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, however, was written exactly how I saw him.

The writing style was noticeably archaic, as this was written long ago. Because of this, sometimes I had to read closely to pick up on the meaning of the sentence, which I had expected. The one thing I was surprised about, however, was how superfluous some of the story was. It was often bogged down by heavy descriptions which I honestly couldn't make sense of, not because it was old-fashioned, but because I could not decipher was Dickens was trying to say, to be honest. Call me simple-minded, I really don't care.

I seem to have a lot of qualms about the book when you read above, but overall, I still enjoyed it and because three stars means "liked the book", that is the rating I have given it. I would recommend this book to read if you want a classic tale for Christmastime, but I would not recommend reading it any other time of year.
Title: Dash & Lily's Book of Dares
Author: Rachel Cohn + David Levithan
Pg. #: 260
Reading Span: December 13 - 21, 2013
Rating: **** (four stars)

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares tells the story of two teenagers who share an unexplainable connection through one red Moleskine notebook, and the adventures the simple journal sets them on.

The one word I could use to describe this book would be entertaining. I was so caught up in Dash and Lily's story, mainly because of the characters. Dash and Lily both had very distinct voices and narratives, which added interest and made it easier to distinguish the alternating POV's. At first, though I thought they were fun and interesting to read about, I didn't really like either Dash or Lily. I found Lily to be whiny and Dash to be sullen and rude, but I grew to love them. The supporting characters like Langston, Boomer, and particularly Great Aunt Idea were all super fun and hilarious and I just loved them! I also loved the character dynamic and dialogue in this book - it was so funny and entertaining to read!

The plot progression was well done; something was always happening and new characters were introduced at the right times to give the plot a boost. Plus I just love the idea for this book so very much, with the journal being passed between the two characters. However, I was hoping for a few more dares and less scavenger hunt. I feel like that was a missed opportunity that the authors could've jumped on.

Overall, this book is a cute and light read for the holiday season. It really sucks you in to it's cute and fun world and you'll find yourself immersed in Dash and Lily's story. This is a book I would definitely recommend, especially for Christmas.
Today I am posting to inform you of a group I am going to participating in. Created by Brianna @ For the Love of Books (follow her - she's awesome!), this club is when you choose any book at all and read it from your bedtime until midnight - hence the name. It sounds super fun and I thought "why not?"

Brianna posts a wrap-up and TBR each night that she participates, but I will just be writing it in the Goodreads group (https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/121725-the-midnight-readers-book-club). If I do a end-of-the-week wrap-up or update, I will include it in that as well.

My first night of reading will probably be tonight, and I am hoping to do it again on Sunday. I will be reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling (re-read), or, if I finish that this afternoon, then I will be reading the Giver by Lois Lowry. I figure I will probably read from 11:00 to midnight.

Feel free to join in, anyone can! Simply join the Goodreads group and post a blog post. Hope to see you there. (:
Have a lovely day!Danikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18108135216189952838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1129306980802659335.post-43252823429295860332013-12-26T13:20:00.001-08:002013-12-26T13:20:36.925-08:00Update + TBRI literally suck. The last book review I posted was Vampire Academy... and I read that in ... September? And before that I hardly posted any reviews as well. I also had a review I was going to do for Liesl and Po that's been sitting around since October. Have I mentioned that I suck? Anyways, in early January I will be posting some of my goals and I will expand on what I'm going to do to fix this problem. But for now, I'm going to be promising four reviews: Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Partials by Dan Wells (when I finish it) and *hides* Liesl and Po by Lauren Oliver.

I also have several tags planned. I apologize sincerely to Brianna @ For the Love of Books and Kalindee @ They Start Revolutions (go and follow them now - them and their blogs are fantastic!) for neglecting to complete either tag. The moment for Bookish Halloween Tag has, sadly, long passed, but I am looking forward to posting the Book Scavenger Hunt tag (check it out on Kalindee's blog). I also have two other tags planned so keep a watch for those.

Finally, what have I been reading? Now that I'm on break, I have so much more time to read. Lately I have been really slowing down with my reading and I don't like it! I have so many books to read, so it's great to get into the swing of things again. So far in December I have read Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (re-read), The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson, Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling (re-read), and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I am actually super excited about this! There is still almost a week left of my favourite month of the year, so I am hoping to finish another three books. Sounds ambitious, but I don't think it'll be too bad considering I'm on break.

Currently I am reading Partials by Dan Wells, my epic rec for... *hides again* November. At first, I was really liking everything about the story, only I couldn't get into it AT ALL. I was practically skimming (which I rarely ever do), and it was a struggle to make it through a few pages. One chapter was a celebration! However, I read a chapter of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, then resumed reading Partials, hoping to motivate myself by rewarding myself with HP when I read so much of Partials (thanks a lot Brianna). But then I read a chapter more and it started getting super action-filled and awesome! So now I'm excited. (:

The books I would like to finish for the rest of December include Partials by Dan Wells, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling and finally, my epic rec for December, The Giver by Lois Lowry. I actually have hope to finish these by December. And if I finish two of these, my goal of 70 books read in 2013 will be met!! And guess what? I'm FINALLY back on track!

This was a very long and overdue update - but I have a lot of catching up to do! Keep updated because I am going to try to post more often in the coming weeks. What are you reading or doing on your break? And I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas!Danikahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18108135216189952838noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1129306980802659335.post-31689408366439423212013-11-30T20:01:00.001-08:002013-12-05T09:50:20.048-08:00November Wrap Up + December TBR/Epic RecsToday is the final day of November which means time to take a look at the books I've read. I had a not-so-great month to be honest. I read five books, which sounds okay, but one was a children's book that was super short and easy to read (took me about an hour) and another was a very quick read that was also mandatory for a novel study.

War Brothers by Sharon E. McKay: *** (three stars) - GINS novel study book

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll: *** (three stars) - Strangest book ever I swear

Unwind by Neil Shusterman: ***** (five stars) - a;lskdjf;lksdjfjasdkjfd

Allegiant by Veronica Roth: **** (four stars) - *cries*

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: ***** (five stars) - Re-read... ahh love these books! <3

I also haven't been keeping up to date with anything really. I didn't do an October Wrap-Up OR a November TBR, I didn't participate in any Top Ten Tuesday's, I didn't complete a book spotlight or November book reviews. I haven't even published or fully written my Liesl and Po review from October. In case you didn't get the message: I've been slacking. All I have posted this month have been mandatory novel posts. I will try to improve that for December! I have quite the extensive list, so take a look (in order of priority).

Partials by Dan Wells - My Epic Rec from this month which I didn't get around to reading. It will happen this month!

Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (re-read) - I just want to, kay.

Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan - Yay light winter contemporary

The Giver by Lois Lowry - My epic rec for December! See more below.

Winterling by Sarah Prineas - Light winter adventures and fantasy!

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens - I haven't read this but this is the traditional Christmas classic!

Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu - Snow Queen winter fairytale, enough said.

Other options: How to Save a Life by Sarah Zarr, Fathomless and Cold Spell by Jackson Pearce, Witchlanders by Lena Coakley and The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson.

Okay, so there are 13 mandatory books. Plus Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins which I'm not even halfway through. Yeah... that's realistic.... I'll try. And fail. Whatever.

I know this post is super long, but I just want to say a quick note about Epic Recs. My book for the month is The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Brianna's is Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers. We both have not read last month's books yet (we're trying!), but we definitely we complete both Epic Recs for December. Check back for another post on that later.

Anyways, have a lovely day. Thanks. (:

From reading the novel “War Brothers”
by Sharon E. McKay, it came to my attention that there are many poor or
impoverished people living in Uganda. 40% of all people living in the rural
areas of Uganda are living in poverty - that’s around 10 million people! See,
in the rural areas of Uganda, there are isolated from the developments and
economic growth happening in the cities. As a result, they lack the technology
to increase the efficiency of their crops and also to rid themselves of pests
and diseases. And honestly, I wanted to know why they didn’t have the
opportunities that we have here to improve their quality of life.

I was able to connect this to one
very part of the government: social programs and services. Social services are
provided by the government to help increase the economic inequalities amongst
citizens, as well as promoting a better quality of life. In Uganda, there is
little access to these type of services, such as health-care or financial
support. There are huge amounts of people that also are sick from AIDS/HIV and
don’t have the access or money for proper health care.

For the purpose of my
mini-investigation, I headed to the Uganda Parliament website to try and get
some insight into how and why their government uses their money. They do have a
committee for social services, including health (and AIDS), education, and
sports, but it isn’t clear what exactly their health-care looks like. I decided
to try to find a bit more information about this. I found a rather interesting
look at their health profile (http://www.who.int/gho/countries/uga.pdf), but
nothing about the way their system runs. When I visited the Ministry of Health
website for Uganda, the link that was supposed to redirect me to their
practices said it was “hacked”. Interesting.

My point of this post was mainly to
reflect and think about the difference in the life we have here as opposed to
somewhere like Uganda. Our country’s wealth, government and economic system,
allows us to live the lives we do and greatly affects our roles as consumers. I
also don’t think we realize in North America the impact that social programs

Today I am posting to announce that Brianna from For The Love of Books and I are going to be participating in Epic Recs! This is a book club hosted by Amber at Books of Amber and Judith at Paper Riot. Basically how it works is you find a partner or friend (Brianna, in my case) and at the beginning of each month, you each recommend a book to each other that they have to read within that month. It's about expanding your horizons and being able to share your thoughts with them on the books you both read. Here are our choices for November...

For Brianna (chosen by me): Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo!
I chose this book because I love it so insanely much and I really want Brianna to read it so we can talk about it!!! Also, this book makes me feel all sorts of things (like clawing my eyes out, for example) and I kinda want to ruin Brianna's life too cause I'm a great friend. Sharing is caring, right?

For Me (chosen by Brianna): Partials by Dan Wells!

I've been wanting to read this and I think I'll like it, but I'm really not in the mood. That said, Brianna recommended it, so read it I shall.

We also each have a back-up book in case this book doesn't come in from the library (not likely for me, since I already have Partials in my possession). I am not going to give those away at this time because if this months picks work out, then the back-ups will be for the following month.

Thanks for reading! I'm hoping we like each other's picks!

You're probably wondering what the heck that's about. As a new study at school, we are inquiring more deeply into our consumer identities. Our way of expressing this is going to be through different types of media presented in a tumblr blog format. I haven't posted anything yet, but maybe you'll be seeing some posts soon.

For the next while, I am going to be participating
in a novel study exploring various global issues within our society. Click here
for more information. The novel I have chosen to read out of the various
options is War Brothers by Sharon E. McKay. So far I have read 20% of
the novel, enough to begin to analyze the content.

What is the main issue being addressed in your
novel?

In the book War Brothers, the focus is on Joseph
Kony's army of abducted child soldiers, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). There
are many references in the book to this event, even though neither of our
characters have yet been taken. "He is sad because he grandfather was
taken by Kony." Joseph spoke in a matter-of-fact voice. Tony's mouth
dropped open. They took him as he was walking home from school, and that is the
last anyone has heard about him. He was just a little younger than us,
then." And, "Kony can't get us, you know. We are
safe."

Why did you choose this piece for your project?

I chose this book because the fact the children the
age I once was have had their childhood stripped from them. The topic of child
soldiers just makes me extremely angry. At their ages they should still be
innocent and not have to go through all the things they have and seen all the
things they have seen.

What background knowledge do you already
possess on this issue?

Though I do feel strongly about children not being abducted
to become child soldiers, I don't know much background information on the
issue. I am aware of Kony and his army of abducted children, but the details I
know are few, and obscure.

What questions do you have as you begin to read?

My main question I had while reading was how the
two boys will become abducted. I am unsure how Kony's child army operates, so I
was totally clueless as to how this will happen. Also, since Jacob's father is
wealthy and he goes to a school with extra guards, how will he become part of
the LRA? I also wondered what "cassava" is. When I looked it up, it
turned out to be a woody shrub that grows in Africa and South America and is
also the root of tapioca. I was also curious to another aspect of their
culture, religion. It mentions how many people are Christian (Oteka and Jacob
included), and how the witchcraft from the medicine man goes against their
religion, but what other religions are prevalent in their society? And is Kony
targeting those people? My last detail I noticed was that Bella, the maid, was
described as being very, very old at over 50 years old. This shows that
diseases mentioned like AIDS really affect their life span. Here, very old is
around 90 years old! That's a huge difference in years. I had more questions
too about why this difference might be so large.

What characters have been introduced so far?

So far we've been introduced to both Jacob and Oteka, the two young boys
who are the focus of the story, and from what I understand, both get taken by
the LRA. Oteka's story is very interesting and sad, and Jacob's is much less
sad, and he as a person is often both naive and ignorant so far from what I
have gathered. I think that his experiences in the novel will change him
however. We also have met many more characters such as Ethel and Bella (maids
at Jacob's), Jacob's father and his friends, Tony (Jacob's friend), Adaa
(Oteka's honorary grandmother), Oteka's deceased family, and the medicine man
Oteka visits. And of course, we've heard lots about Joseph Kony.

Right now I am still getting a feel for the culture, setting, and characters, but I am very much anticipating when the deeper issues begin to be explored. Thanks for reading!
