Book Spotlight!

The first one of these I did was back in March 2013, but since May, I haven't continued it. So I decided I would spotlight a book today. I chose this book not because it was my favourite book, but because I am not planning on doing a review and still wanted to share my love for the book I am doing a spotlight. It is also not super well known, so I want to tell more people about this book!

Goodreads Synopsis:

After her mother died, Glory retreated into herself and her music. Her single father raised her as a piano prodigy, with a rigid schedule and the goal of playing sold-out shows across the globe. Now, as a teenager, Glory has disappeared. As we flash back to the events leading up to her disappearance, we see a girl on the precipice of disaster. Brilliant and lonely, Glory is drawn to an artistic new boy, Frank, who moves in next door. The farther she falls, the deeper she spirals into madness. Before long, Glory is unable to play anything but the song "Chopsticks."But nothing is what it seems, and Glory's reality is not reality at all. In this stunningly moving novel told in photographs, pictures, and words, it's up to the reader to decide what is real, what is imagined, and what has been madness all along....

Sounds intriguing, right? It is. It's awesome. Told mostly in pictures with some type, IM's, and news clippings, this book leaves many things up for interpretation. As it says in the synopsis, it is up to the reader to decide. This made the book extremely beautiful, poignant, and powerful, and it's enjoyable to follow the clues and look closely to make sure you haven't missed anything that would've destroyed your understanding. Though it is super quick, don't speed through it - pay attention to the little things. Overall, it's a beautiful story, so give it a try.
My Rating: 4/5 stars.

I recommend this book to teenagers that like books with visuals and 'clues', or are reluctant to read. If you like a type of book that doesn't tell you everything and that leaves many things up for interpretation, this is also a great read! Really though, it's super short, so give it a try.

May Book Spotlight

This is my now-monthly Book Spotlight featuring my favourite book of the month. I am so sorry about the lateness of this post, I was certain I had published it! Anyway, it's been sitting, completely finished but unpublished in my posts for weeks. Anways, in the month of May, my favourite book I read was...

CINDER by Marissa Meyer!

Goodreads Synopsis
Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

I loved Cinder! The book resembled and followed the fairytale, but Meyer wasn't afraid to stray from the original story and add in her own unique elements. I really loved how everything tied together at the end. The characters were interesting and well-described, and I loved the author's writing style. For someone who rarely buys books, it is very high praise for me to say-- Go out and buy this book now!
My rating: 5/5 stars.

I recommend this book to pretty much anyone. It has a little bit of everything! If you enjoy unique spins on fairytales and dystopia novels, I recommend checking this book out. The only people I wouldn't suggest this for is anyone who isn't a big fan of YA books.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Like last month's book spotlight, this novel is the author's debut, so check it out. Thanks for reading!

March Book Spotlight

So I forgot to talk about my favourite book in my wrap-up . . . *face palm* Anyway, it led to an idea for a new post. Since my wrap-up also contain my next month TBR, they get to be pretty long. So, instead I am now creating a new feature-- Book Spotlight! I may do this in the middle of the month or whenever I feel like it, but I will always have one at the end of the month. So yeah, this will basically be a Goodreads synopsis, three to five sentence review of my condensed thoughts or my reading experience, a rating, and why you should pick it up/recommendation. Yeah. Without further ado, my favourite book of March was (drumroll please)...

ALTERED by JENNIFER RUSH.

Goodreads Synopsis
When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

This book came very out-of-the-blue for me. I thought, "hmmm, why not?" and quickly put it on hold. My expectations were low, and they were way overachieved. This book has an awesome blend of suspense, intrigue, and action mixed with character struggles and romance. The first chapters instantly pull you in with their lyrical quality and mystique. Pick this up, you've got nothing to lose!
My rating: 4.5/5 stars.

I recommend this book to dystopia fans as well as anyone looking for an entertaining, fast-paced, quick read. Though not without it's flaws, I would still recommend this book to almost everyone. Unless you don't like reading good books. Then this is not for you.

Thanks, I hope you enjoyed this Book Spotlight, I really encourage you to pick up this novel from a debut author. :)
